Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi UMY yang telah berdiri sejak tahun 1996, senantiasa mengikuti perkembangan kajian kelimuan khususnya di bidang ilmu komunikasi. Perkembangan teknologi dan informasi yang semakin pesat, menuntut masyarakat untuk lebih melek informasi dan cerdas dalam memanfaatkan informasi tersebut.
Advertising focuses on ‘Strategic Planning’ and ‘Creative Copy Base’ of a brand marketing communication management. This study area combines the understanding of consumer behavior and brand investigation to reveal a relevant message. Brainstorming will be undertaken to obtain a creative idea of delivering the message through various integrated modern media.
Courses of Advertising are Consumer Behavior, Integrated Marketing Communication, Copywriting, Printed and Outdoor Advertising Making, Radio and Television Advertising Making, Advertising Research, Audio Visual Communication Design, Graphic Design, Law and Ethics of Advertising, and Creative Thinking.
Before Advertising students graduate, they are encouraged to join advertising competition like UMY Communication Award, Advertising UIN, Ajisaka UGM, Caraka Advertising Festival, and Pinasthika Advertising Festival. Through the competition, the students are expected to learn, perceive, and meet advertisers. Advertising festivals, indeed, become occasions for the students to begin their career as copywriter, strategic planner, account executive, media director, advertising producer and brand manager.

Broadcasting focuses on feature and documentary films, and this study area is expected to become the only one higher education whose department creates prospective professional who are capable of producing feature programs and documentary films.
Courses of Public Relations are Broadcasting Bases, Information and Technology Communication, Broadcasting Media Management, Radio and Television Program Planning, Scriptwriting, Cinematography, Film Studies, Negotiation, Feature and Documentary Production, Reportage Techniques, Radio Program Production, and Television Program Production.
Job prospects of the Broadcasting graduates are Reporter, News Presenter, Entertainment Presenter, Announcer, Master of Ceremony, Director, Copywriter, Moviemaker, Producer, Animator, Cameraman and Researcher.
Public Relations focuses on studies of social and political public relations, and Communication Sciences of UMY is the one and only department in Indonesia concerning with the studies. Public Relations is a study of duties and professions of internal as well as external information and communication management of an institution or organization.
Courses of Public Relations are Public Relations Management, External Relations, Media Making of Public Relations, Consumer Behavior, Negotiation and Lobbying Techniques, Government and Public Affairs, Issue and Crisis Management, Conflict Resolution, Professional Image, and Organization Communication.
Job prospects of the Public Relations graduates are Public Relations officer at various governmental institutions, commercial companies, government organization, non-government organization (NGO), project officer, project manager, and account executive.
